LASTING PEACE IN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE

Topic: Peace in the Middle East. Breaching the divide, finding humanity in your enemy.

Issue: In the context of Israel and Palestine, what would peace look like (and to whom), and how would/could/should it be achieved and sustained? Different stakeholders have different perspectives. At risk: security, safety, dignity and life itself.

Presenters: Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger and Ali Abu Awwad

Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger divides his time between Israel and the USA. He is a member of the Rabbinical Council of America and the International Rabbinic Fellowship, as well as Beit Hillel, an Israeli rabbinical association. He is a Rabbis Without Borders fellow, and was honored in 2013 and again in 2014 as the Memnosyne Institute Interfaith Scholar.

He and his Israeli–born wife Ayala reside in Alon Shvut, Israel, and have four grown children and six grandchildren.

Ali Abu Awwad is a leading Palestinian activist who teaches his countrymen non-violent resistance and reaches out to Jewish Israelis at the heart of the conflict.  He tours the world to tell his riveting story of violent activism, imprisonment, bereavement, and discovery of the path of non-violent  resistance.

"The path to Palestinian freedom should run through Jewish hearts and minds."

The Roots project draws Israelis and Palestinians who, despite living next to each other, are separated by walls of fear - not just fear of each other, but even of the price of peace. In order to bring the two peoples together, the project's outreach program includes monthly meetings between Israeli and Palestinian families, a women's group, work with school children, engaging local leaders, a summer camp, language learning, and cultural exchanges.
